The Waterford-Dungarvan Railway

Long disused but once famously scenic, the Waterford-Dungarvan railway has been converted into a truly stunning cycle and walking route. The first section, from Kilmacthomas to Dungarvan, was reopened in 2016, and 2017 saw the Kilmacthomas to Waterford section completed.

The full route is almost 45 kilometres long and has a hard surface all the way. The route is a mix of a coastal and inland section and offers breathtaking views.

The remains of old railway infrastructure, such as the Durrow/Stradbally signal box, can still be found along the route, providing added interest for the railway buff!

In places, the Waterford Greenway runs alongside the Waterford and Suir Valley narrow gauge railway.

Along the Waterford Greenway, there are some stunning sights:

  • The world-famous Mount Congreve Gardens (directly accessible from the Greenway)
  • The Durrow 7-arch Viaduct
  • The Kilmacthomas 8-arch stone viaduct
  • The Ballyvoyle brick-lined tunnel
  • The lovely town of Dungarvan, with its stunning views across Dungarvan Bay
